Se acerca el fnal del curso y queremos despedirnos con esta última noche de Intercambio. Vamos a tener una noche más festiva de lo habitual con nuestra habitual mezcla de culturas y con un karaoke (of course, in English, Spanish and Catalan) como atracción principal. A los aficionados a nuestro Quiz habitual, les animo a que vengan a probar otras habilidades y a pasarlo bien como siempre. Y los que no han venido nunca a un Intercambio Night que se animen también que es la última (de este curso al menos).

De que trata el Intercambio?: Pues es un evento que organiza Oxford House (la escuela de idiomas) y que combina la práctica del inglés, castellano u catalán con un ambiente social y ocioso, amenizado siempre por nuestras actividades (ej. quiz, karaoke). Es un complemento genial para quien esté aprendiendo inglés o quiera practicarlo.

What's on this month?: First intercambio of the term! Given the success of the latest editions, we have decided to repeat the Quiz idea yet again. The game will be the same, people will be divided into groups (deliberately diverse to meet the objective of intercambio nights) and we'll project questions which each group will answer on a sheet. The novelty will be that we will also shout out some of the questions. At the end, the group with th most correct answers will win a little prize.

Qué hay este mes?: Primer Intercambio del trimestre! Dado el éxito de las anteriores ediciones, vamos a repedir la idea del Quiz una vez más. El juego será el mismo, la gente se dividirá en grupos (deliberadamente diversos, para cumplir el objetivo del intercambio) y proyectaremos una serie de preguntas de todo tipo que cada grupo deberá contestar, con la novedad de que esta vez habrá preguntas habladas también. Al final, el grupo con más aciertos ganará un pequeño premio.

Qué hay este mes?: Es un Nuevo trimestre, y vuelven las noches de intercambio! Jugaremos a juegos de mesa como el Scrabble y de fiesta como el Cranium, además habrá Poker.

Qué estaré haciendo?: Habrá distintas mesas de juego alrededor de las tress alas principales de Oxford House, y puedes elegir en cual quieres jugar. Cada juego se jugará en inglés, castellano, catalán, incluso lenguaje de signos si es necesario(aunque practicar los idiomas es lo más recomendable!) Puedes moverte libremente por las mesas y probar todos los juegos.

Qué sacaré de esto?: Para el final de la noche habrás mejorado tus habilidades con el idioma y conocido a gente nueva, puedes incluso haber aprendido un juego Nuevo.

What's on this month?: It's a new term, and nd Intercambio Nights are back! We'll be playing board games like Scrabble and party games like Cranium, as well as Poker.

What will I be doing?: There will be different games tables around the three main rooms of Oxford House, and you can pick any game you like to play. Each game will be played in English, Catalan, Spanish, and whatever sign language you need to make yourself clear (although language practice is strongly encouraged!) You don't have to stay with any one game all night, though - feel free to move around and try them all.

What will I get out of this?: By the end of the night you will have improved your language skills and had the chance to meet new people, and you might even have learnt a new game.

What if I don't have a high level of English? Don't worry! Everyone who attends the Intercambio Nights is there to learn. With the support of the other players you'll get along fine.

GONE but not forgotten

Our last ¨Language Exchange Night¨ was wicked! I would like send a great big thank you to all who attended. We had a spooky night of fun conversation with lots of CaNDY to keep us us going. The ¨Best Costume¨ was awarded to Danny in his ghoulish get up though Matt W J took a close second as a soccer ball turned pumpkin head.. Actually I´m not sure what he was but it was scarey man.

Can´t wait till next time crowd and remember EVeRY LASt Thursday of the month... see you there!

Put it On Paper

Whether its a cheesy pick up line, trivial fact, or simply your opinion it all seems so much more real when written on paper, doesn't it? Our last "Intercambio" of the season gave everyone a chance to practice "coming to terms" with these realities, or rather, just a chance to share them with others. We were an unbolted group with conversation in Spanish, English, and Catalan. Topics ranged from love, travel, hope, secrets and salads. The quick scribbles on "papelitas" really helped people to open up. A personal favorite : I like having sex but usually end up making love. Oh my.... I have a telephone number ready for whomever wrote that one.

Though more importantly, we'd like offer a huge THANK YOU! The donation collected from our "Intercambioians" and the BCN Cafe will help make an impact on the city of Barcelona. More specifically, The Association of DJs CONTRA LA FAM has informed us that our donation alone will go towards either paying for a workshop leader or a new printer or a new camera. Super!super!

Creating opportunities for creating art is beautiful and doing it while having fun is even more gorgeous. One last thank you to our live DJ, Jalud - you rocked! And now I'm off to try and find the one who scribed I want to be a National Geographic correspondent because well, me too! Why not? Though watch out I'm pretty competitive.

Oxford House has teamed up with a local non-profit organization, The Social-Cultural Association DJ's CONTRA LA FAM, which utilizes social and cultural activities as a means for social change. They organize, promote, and manage urban cultural actions and initiatives. All money raised will help with their mission to generate personal, intellectual, creative and economic growth for poor, marginalized communities while also increasing awareness of local poverty and hunger issues.

Rock and roll always wins

The second Thursday of the month crept up WAY TOO QUICKLY for May's Language Exchange and it felt like it was over just as fast! It was wonderful. This month really gave an opportunity to get to know one another with the use of our TESL classic "Find Someone Who" and the enthused group. We were an intimate group but that only allowed for more conversation, whatsmore.... I actually spoke Catalan and understood what I said, an amazing feat for which I'd like to thank all.

Ms. Karme was the star of the night, donning an amazing Iron Maiden t-shirt, this Catalan native was schooling us on everything from the art of a "Calcotada" to stress management at the Generalitat de Barcelona. Rock on sister!

Thanks again everyone! Remember.... second Thursday of the month means fun at the BCN Cafe.

For being serious language seekers we sure know how to have fun. This past Thursday was a phenomenal success bringing in friends from Asia, the America's and back around again to Eastern Europe!

Actively scribbling away, Pictionary players used stick figures to express newly learned words, in Catalan nonetheless. Then moved on to kick-butt in a world of other Board Games.

The excite had everyone sweating or maybe that was just Team "All Blacks" on fire! They walked away with the most points for the evening, earning themselves a goody bag of April Fool's Tricks. You can't beat a whoopee cushion and room full of people to test it out on.

Can't wait for next time!

La Noche de "Pub Quiz"

La noche de “Pub Quiz” fue un éxito total! Nos gustaría dar gracias a Oxford House, BCN Café y lo más importante… a todos los que asistieron! Gracias a vosotros lo hicimos posible. Cada silla del bar estaba ocupada de tanta gente que había, en serio! Estábamos tan ocupados charlando que el equipo que había en el fondo agachado en la mesa fue desapercibido, aun todavía listo para jugar. Sí, estaba muy animado, hasta antes de la rendición de “el vuelo del abejorro” de la nariz de Mathew. Nada está mejor que un montón de gente energética con avidez de idiomas.

Aunque equipo “Trousers” fue quien se llevó el premio esta vez, todos estamos orgullosos del resto de equipos como “Calle representación de Trivialidades”, incluso el científico quien puede atestiguar a la memoria de los pulpos (mucho mejor que elefantes). Estate al loro de los próximos intercambios y trae a tus amigos contigo. Contra más seremos, más reiremos!!

Pub Quiz - Everyone's A Winner!

“Pub Quiz Night” was an overwhelming success! We would like to thank Oxford House, the BCN Café and most importantly…. all who attended! You made it happen. Every seat in the house was taken, literally. We were so busy chatting that the team in the back squatting on the table went unnoticed, yet still ready to play. Yes, we were a lively group even before Matt’s nose-fluting rendition of “The Flight of the Bumblebee”. Nothing better than a crowd of energetic language seekers and I might add that this was the most handsome group yet.

Though Team Trousers walked away with the prize this time, we should all be proud of our “Trivia Street Rep”, even the scientist who can vouch for Octopus and their exceptional memories (far better than elephants). Keep an eye out for Intercambios to come and bring your friends. More people, more fun, more prizes and more LANGUAGE!

Oh What A Night!

Gracias a todos los que vinieron el jueves al Intercambio Night. Tuvimos más de 35 personas practicando inglés, castellano, catalán y hasta italiano! Aquí tenemos algunos comentarios acerca de la pasada noche:

Aún quedan cosas que arreglar para que la próxima vez todo sea aún mejor. Por ejemplo, podrían intentar anotarse con antelación y tratar de llegar a tiempo. De esta manera se facilitaría la organización de actividades tomando en cuenta el espacio de manera que todos estén cómodos y entiendan qué deben hacer.

Muchos han mencionado que las 8pm es demasiado temprano por lo que el próximo mes comenzaremos un poco más tarde.

There are still some things we would like to improve for next time so everything runs smoother. To help us do this it’s really important that you all remember to sign up in advance and arrive on time. This way we can organize our activities and the space so everyone is comfortable and understands what to do. Many people mentioned that 8pm is too early so next month we will be starting a little later.

Intercambio Cocktails!

To celebrate the new Intercambio Nights, BCN Cafe have created a new cocktail - just for us! It's free for everyone who has registered for the Intercambio Night this Thursday. Un intercambio de idiomas es una buena forma de aprender y practicar un idioma de la manera que esta hablado en el país de origen, como expresiones informales y el argot.

Por lo tanto, un intercambio de idioma es el mejor entrenamiento para superar la barrera que se produce entre el aula y la comunicación en el mundo real.

BCN Cafe is a stylish cafe-bar which has recently opened in Concel de Cent.
As well as offering a great range of beers and wines, they also offer an creative selection of sandwiches, made to order. Being a new business, all the staff are incredibly friendly and only too willing to make your experience a good one.

What's on this month?
This month we will be holding a SPEED-CAMBIO night! We have taken this idea from a new, and increasingly popular activity called 'speed-dating'. (If you've never heard of this, check out this link speed dating).

What will I be doing?
Basically, all the participants will be put into pairs and given a topic and a language. Each pair has five minutes to talk about that topic, using that language. When the five minutes are up new pairs are formed and the topic and language changes.

What will I get out of this?
By the end of the session each person will have had the chance to meet new people and talk about a range of interesting topics. You will have practised a different language and probably taught and learned some new expressions.

What if I don't have a high level of English?
Don't worry! Everyone who attends the Intercambio Nights is there to learn (wait till you hear me trying to speak Catalan!). In addition to this, there will be slides shown for each topic which have useful vocabulary and structures to help you in your conversations. You can take a copy of these home with you at the end of the night!
